hey I want to tell you a little bit
00:02
about why goal-setting is important and
00:04
why it's important to live by a goal but
00:06
from a neuroscience perspective
00:13
I'm here at Red Rock Canyon just outside
00:15
of Las Vegas place is awesome
00:18
like incredible climbs all over the
00:19
place and I was climbing with a couple
00:21
of guys who are a lot better than me and
00:23
I had some lofty goals there were some
00:25
big climbs I wanted to get and make sure
00:27
I pulled off now if my focus was
00:30
entirely on the goal and the end result
00:32
then my brain is going to be fighting
00:35
the whole time I'm going to be in this
00:36
fight flight a freeze response from the
00:38
amygdala to try and get to that goal
00:40
because I feel like a failure if I don't
00:43
do it I didn't reach the goal I didn't
00:44
climb the climb that I wanted to climb
00:46
cleanly today but I learned four or five
00:49
different things that every time I
00:52
learned them and I said to myself hey
00:54
that's a new skill you just picked up
00:56
that's a great insight that's something
01:00
that really aligns well with with my
01:02
values and my mission which is to get
01:04
better every day when I train to push
01:06
myself to enjoy the outdoors all the
01:08
things that I value all the things that
01:10
are important to me if I could find
01:12
successes along the way it means I'm not
01:15
just waiting for that goal attainment if
01:17
you just wait for the goal attainment
01:19
then you're not getting these little
01:21
squirts of dopamine and that's why
01:23
people say it's the journey that's
01:24
important you got to understand from the
01:26
neuroscience perspective what's going on
01:28
in your head how to make that journey
01:29
important so little success is finding
01:32
something you do even if you don't make
01:34
it to the top even if you don't climb
01:35
that great but finding that you did
01:37
something great even if your book
01:39
doesn't get published just finding the
01:41
fact that you're writing got better all
01:43
these little things are what helps us
01:45
live a really successful happy fulfilled
01:48
life that we're able to take enjoyment
01:50
even if we don't attain the goal o set
01:52
your goals high set them lofty work hard
01:54
to get there but along the way find
01:57
things to celebrate find things to
01:59
really be proud of and and that aligned
02:01
with your values and your mission and
02:03
that'll make the journey super fun no
02:06
matter what happens at the end
