if you could recall the scariest moment
00:02
of your life what would that be I say
00:04
the scariest moment was when I was doing
00:06
Mach 2 and I got hit by a missile and
00:09
the airplane was out of control
00:11
spinning violently and I couldn't get
00:14
the ejection seat because hey I'm
00:18
Patrick Sweeney
00:19
welcome to the fearest fuel newsletter
00:21
I'm super excited to be bringing you
00:24
this now I know you're probably not as
00:26
excited as I am
00:27
but trust me after a couple of these
00:30
things I think you will be this first
00:32
episode of fear as fuel I'm bringing you
00:34
the bravest man in the world that's
00:37
Colonel Joe Kittinger Colonel Kittinger
00:40
flew over three hundred and eighty
00:41
missions in Vietnam before he got shot
00:43
down he spent almost a year at the
00:45
infamous Hanoi Hilton prisoner of war
00:47
camp where John McCain was and then he
00:51
became the first person to fly a hot air
00:53
balloon across the Atlantic but that's
00:55
not the bravest thing he ever did the
00:57
bravest thing he ever did was take a
00:59
hot-air balloon up over a hundred
01:01
thousand feet and parachute out he did
01:04
this fifty years before Felix
01:06
Baumgartner did it for Red Bull which
01:08
was 2012 i sat down with Colonel
01:11
Kittinger near his home in Orlando
01:13
Florida
01:13
and he's got some great advice take a
01:16
look well thank you so much for spending
01:18
some time and I know you're a little bit
01:20
pressed but if we can take five minutes
01:22
I've got a few questions for you that
01:24
people out there would love to hear
01:26
first and foremost is your thoughts on
01:30
fear fear is a lack of self-confidence
01:35
so if you have confidence in yourself
01:38
you can overcome fear
01:44
the saddest person is a person that
01:47
doesn't have comments in themselves
01:50
I was fortunate in my military career
01:53
that I had a lot of opportunities to
01:55
face fear and if I had an apprehension
02:00
I would analyze what caused the
02:03
attribute I loved like I enjoyed and I
02:07
have the keys of having a Jeff threat
02:11
that's absolutely incorrect
02:12
I love life but I never did anything
02:16
that I didn't think I was going to
02:18
survive so were you scared when you were
02:20
taking that first step out of the
02:23
balloon for the parachute for the
02:25
Stratford passion have commas in my
02:27
equipment cuff my team talked to myself
02:29
and I was there for a reason and how was
02:34
experimental test pilots I was used to
02:36
being in situations that required a
02:40
different approach that you were going
02:42
into an area never been explored before
02:44
and I was ready to go came time to go I
02:48
was no hesitation I was ready to go I
02:52
had worked for a year and a half at that
02:54
time i set that goal and worked worked
02:56
worked with a bunch of great guys and i
03:00
felt i will let him down also because
03:03
they had worked for my best fit so no I
03:06
had no fear with us let's get ready to
03:08
jump because I had confidence in myself
03:10
right quick so what was the last thing
03:13
that went through your mind or what was
03:14
the last thing you said when you when
03:15
you took that first step I said Lord
03:18
take care of me and he did push the
03:21
button to start the cameras and jump you
03:25
can use fear to the advantage by
03:31
identifying the fact that it is and then
03:36
work how to get out of it how it's a non
03:39
except fear how to have a different
03:42
course a different direction or maybe
03:45
it's the fact that I'm tougher or I'm
03:47
better discipline I'm smarter I'm a
03:52
little sad and you have to have that
03:55
confidence after the conference without
03:56
it you're in trouble
03:57
you were kind enough to help break your
04:00
own record after 52 years you helped the
04:03
Red Bull team and and Felix Baumgartner
04:05
break the the stratosphere record what
04:09
was the difference 52 years the
04:11
difference between a plane back then and
04:14
now is unbelievable it must have been
04:16
the same with the equipment that the Red
04:18
Bull team used versus what you use the
04:21
technology had increased a great deal
04:23
it's two years of advancement yeah and
04:27
pressure suits and parachutes and lots
04:30
of equipment so there was the big
04:31
difference between when I did it when I
04:34
did it was like driving a Model T Ford
04:36
yeah it was like driving a 2018 that's
04:41
wrong yeah big difference in technology
04:44
that transpired but the threat was just
04:48
the same lack of pressure does not
04:52
change the threat of doing something
04:56
that had been done before I was a boy
05:00
scout okay and it teaches the right
05:05
lessons yeah you can take care of
05:07
yourself you go out to the woods you can
05:09
cook you can you can do fish survive
05:13
it's got a really helped me it started
05:16
me on the road that I had confidence I
05:19
could take care of myself anyplace I
05:22
encouraged young men to get into scouts
05:26
it helps them after the community it
05:29
helps society helps our government and
05:34
there's only 1% of the scouts become
05:37
Eagle Scouts but that's needs to be a
05:40
goal when a man here when a boy interest
05:43
in spinkle Scouts his goal should be to
05:46
be an Eagle Scout and that's where the
05:49
lessons you learned it's goal-setting
05:50
and that also helps get away from Evans
05:53
here because if you set a goal and work
05:56
toward that goal you can you accomplish
05:59
even and let's say that you have a new
06:01
job if you have fear the way to take
06:06
tackle that is say I'm gonna do the best
06:09
job I could ever do
06:11
nobody's gonna get to me I'm gonna be a
06:13
success because I'm gonna work hard to
06:15
do it so it takes discipline sake
06:17
self-confidence but they should never
06:20
give up never never never ever give up
06:24
and that's another lesson that's
06:26
important that they set goals and work
06:28
toward those goals if you could recall
06:31
them the scariest moment of your life
06:33
what would that be I'd say the scariest
06:35
moment was when I was doing Mach 2 and I
06:37
got hit by a missile and the airplane
06:41
was out of control spinning violently
06:42
and I couldn't get the ejection seat
06:45
handle because of the g-forces and I I
06:50
was I was felt that I might not live but
06:55
I went to the allman of the ejection
06:56
handle injected my back seat who went
06:59
out first and then I went but I will say
07:01
that was the scariest moment and then
07:03
when I was coming down to parachute they
07:05
were shooting at me from the ground just
07:09
when you thought you made it that was
07:12
that was no fun and and you've been in
07:16
over 91 different aircraft
07:19
93 different aircraft what was your
07:21
favorite one well my favorite of
07:23
prop-driven airplane was p-51 and my
07:27
favorite jet was f4 they were two great
07:32
airplanes and I just love flat both of
07:34
them and I flew all every airplane that
07:37
flew I'd do it for me I never flew an
07:39
airplane I did license because each one
07:42
of them's a challenge and that's why I
07:45
approached it okay well you you were an
07:50
amazing American Hero
07:51
well decorated more Awards that we can
07:53
say thank you very much for your service
