00:00
brought companies through 911 and came
00:03
out the other side and much stronger and
00:04
better through the financial crisis so
00:07
this is familiar territory for me and
00:10
then for the book which you see there I
00:13
spent six years working with three dozen
00:16
of the world's top neuroscientists
00:18
to find out how the brain works so we're
00:20
gonna do a little bit of neuroscience
00:22
we're gonna do some strategy about
00:24
what's happening now and then I'll share
00:26
the the way that I'm looking at sort of
00:28
the the köppen world if we get too deep
00:30
in neuroscience I'm gonna give you guys
00:33
a nerd alert so I'll let you know when
00:36
we're gonna talk about a little bit of
00:38
neuroscience if you want to just you
00:40
know kind of tune out for them that's
00:41
okay with me but first before we before
00:46
we get too much into it I wanted to ask
00:48
a neuroscience question so we're gonna
00:51
take a quick poll what I'd like everyone
00:53
to do is if Caroline or senior could put
00:56
up the first polling question here's a
00:58
question for you that's a little bit of
01:00
neuroscience there we go so now this is
01:08
to rate your ability to multitask and
01:11
while everyone's filling that in Xena
01:13
I'll ask you first what where would you
01:16
rate your ability to multitask on those
01:18
three choices oh I'm a genius okay
01:26
Caroline can we see the results from
01:29
people and then I'm gonna give away one
01:31
of my little secrets we can absolutely
01:33
so I'm just gonna end the poll and we're
01:36
gonna share our results okay so so you
01:41
guys are you think you're about in the
01:43
middle you can walk and chew gum at the
01:44
same time so that's that's a fairly
01:47
typical response now here's the bad news
01:49
for everyone that said you're a juggling
01:52
genius there is no such thing as
01:54
multitasking there's a brilliant
01:57
neuroscientist who's a good friend of
01:59
mine at MIT Massachusetts Institute of
02:02
Technology here in Boston and his name's
02:05
Earl Miller and what he discovered was
02:07
it takes literally a second we have
02:11
something in smart
02:12
part of our brain the prefrontal cortex
02:13
called the working memory and the
02:16
working memory is kind of like the RAM
02:18
drive on your computer or yeah it's more
02:20
like a screen on your cell phone you can
02:22
only have one app up at a time in the
02:24
working memory and so what happens when
02:27
you listen to me and then check your
02:29
email for instance this app stops you
02:32
have to switch to the next app back in
02:34
in this case the email and that takes
02:36
just about a second and in addition to
02:39
taking a second you have to rewind a
02:41
little bit so your brain can make sense
02:43
of where it is so the notion of
02:45
multitasking is really what what he
02:49
refers to it is multi switching because
02:52
you're switching back and forth so if
02:54
you want to get the best out of anything
02:55
like this webinar for instance then you
02:58
should try and plan focus time for each
03:00
one of your activity so if you're doing
03:03
sales calls if you're doing a webinar if
03:06
you're doing anything like that try and
03:08
plan out a time where you can just
03:09
segregate 40 minutes or 45 minutes
03:12
that's about the extent that we can
03:14
really stay focus and just focus on one
03:16
thing so unfortunately if you pick
03:19
number one or number two you're you're
03:20
wrong and you lose that first one but
03:23
we've got plenty more questions so stay
03:25
stay focused as we go through this and
03:28
we'll talk a little bit more about
03:31
making a mistake you gather so much
03:33
information from that and I think you
03:36
know if we go back to to what I was
03:39
talking about in terms of where the
03:42
industry is right now if we're gonna
03:44
change our decision-making and let's say
03:46
they just to short cut some of these
03:48
things flow we'll use the other loop and
03:50
we're gonna make opportunity based
03:52
decisions if we change how we work then
03:55
we're gonna look at everything from
03:56
employee health to communication to work
04:01
hours if we look at engaging our
04:04
customer we might be switching from
04:06
creating a product and delivering it to
04:08
a customer to now becoming customer
04:11
centric which is really scary because it
04:13
might mean you have to change do it to
04:14
doing things on demand and to creating
04:17
new ideas and then serving the
04:19
communities is self-explanatory but a
04:21
lot of people have fear about that too
04:23
because they say you know if I spend
04:25
I'm doing this it's less time for my
04:27
business but you can tie all of this
04:30
together and Xena you know I'm not sure
04:33
if you're doing this from a corporate
04:35
perspective but going into what I see is
04:38
the is the new normal and moving to this
04:41
success phase over here in in the way
04:44
the new the next normal is going to be I
04:47
think we have to come up with ways that
04:50
we haven't even thought about before
04:52
part of that is going to be bringing in
04:54
a lot more information than you have but
04:57
this is from my perspective a huge
04:59
opportunity for travel planners right
05:01
because now you've got the ability if
05:04
you make yourself customer centric if
05:06
you bring in a dashboard with all the
05:09
critical information it's not going to
05:11
be what it used to be right so now
05:13
everyone like me I want to travel I'm
05:16
going to France in July you know I've
05:18
got my kids want to travel I've got
05:20
friends who want to travel but we don't
05:22
know what different government policies
05:24
are we don't know what different borders
05:27
are doing we don't know where the trends
05:29
are in in pandemic and response so if
05:32
you guys had a dashboard with all this
05:35
information that nobody else has now all
05:37
of a sudden your value is travel
05:39
planners go from someone who just knows
05:41
the best hotels and the cheapest Affairs
05:44
to be in someone I can really trust
05:46
because there's so much uncertainty so
05:49
to your clients this uncertainty is a
05:51
bad thing to you guys it's a huge
05:53
opportunity sharing McCrea from class of
05:56
2005 you are our lucky winner so please
05:59
shoot me your address I'll drop my email
06:03
in there and we'll get a copy of that
06:05
book out to you this week sometime but
