00:08
Patrick Sweeney has built an amazing
00:11
life based on fear fear he loved the
00:15
technology world behind after a
00:17
life-changing event and is now a
00:19
professional adventurer with a mission
00:21
to help others find more fear fear is
00:26
probably the least understood yet most
00:30
powerful force we can tap into he is a
00:33
rock star in a whole bunch of things
00:35
from a second place finish in the
00:37
Olympic rowing files to founding 3 tech
00:40
companies Patrick is the first person to
00:42
attempt cycling the Seven Summits the
00:46
highest peak on each continent Patrick's
00:49
done a lot of things that together don't
00:51
exist usually in one person terms of
00:53
experience and accomplishment that gives
00:56
him unique perspectives and I think he's
00:58
come up with an entry way to talk about
00:59
sphere and turning it into something
01:02
else please welcome the fear guru
01:05
himself an expert in creating a culture
01:08
of courage mr. Patrick Sweeney
01:13
[Applause]
01:18
[Music]
01:28
so we're gonna find more fear we're
01:30
gonna feed it you can use fear to make
01:33
radically better decisions and I'll tell
01:36
you the neuroscience behind it there's a
01:38
small gland at the base of our brain
01:40
called the amygdala and it handles the 3
01:42
apps so you have the fight flight or
01:45
freeze response as a little kid to save
01:47
your life
01:48
the amygdala has been there for
01:50
thousands and thousands of years to keep
01:51
us from getting eaten by a woolly
01:53
mammoth or trampled over or getting torn
01:56
apart by a saber-toothed tiger that's
01:58
what the that's what the amygdala does
02:00
that's a great thing about it but it was
02:02
meant for a society in a world hundreds
02:04
of thousands of years ago the good news
02:07
is if we hack that amygdala we can use
02:10
it for superhuman performance we get
02:12
about 10% of our information from the
02:14
conscious world 90% of it is going into
02:17
the amygdala and we don't even see that
02:19
it's going on and we don't even
02:20
recognize it what just happened is
02:22
something amazing that our body does our
02:25
mind just did something incredible
02:28
we created a change in our body nothing
02:33
happened in the world there was no
02:35
threat no fear up here the roof wasn't
02:38
gonna collapse there weren't people
02:40
coming in with guns and bombs but our
02:43
mind is so powerful that created a
02:47
change physically in our body that can
02:50
be used for something very good an
02:52
amazing performance or that can be used
02:55
for something very bad and really hurt
02:57
you from a health perspective so what I
02:59
want everyone to think about in the
03:01
audience is what physical sensations
03:04
you're feeling in your body because this
03:05
is gonna be really important what I was
03:07
surprised that during the talk
03:08
ultimately was
03:09
hearing was one feeling things there's
03:12
very few talks where you actually get to
03:14
that the speaker makes you physically
03:16
feel something and identify those
03:18
feelings which is really cool I thought
03:20
Patrick's talk was very inspirational
03:22
the way he challenges us to face our
03:25
fears and recognize our fears and sees
03:27
our fears is not something that many
03:28
people talk about so I don't think that
03:30
most people know how to recognize those
03:32
symptoms let alone rein them in embrace
03:35
them and then use them to your advantage
03:36
for thirty years I lived with this this
03:40
terrible fear of flying every time I got
03:43
them aboard or anywhere near an aircraft
03:45
I got more and more scared and one thing
03:48
that I found is this cowardice begets
03:51
cowardice and I'm thinking well why am I
03:54
sitting here I used to be afraid of
03:56
everything I lived my entire life in
03:58
shame and fearful and running from fear
04:02
and I didn't know it at the time and I
04:04
was trying to numb out my fear with
04:07
drinking with money with material things
04:09
and so I sat there in the hospital and
04:14
all I could think about was my
04:15
one-year-old daughter with the image she
04:17
had of her dad be the guy who is too
04:20
much of a coward to get on a plane and
04:22
take her to Disney World
04:23
that's when I decided that I was going
04:26
to kick that disease and when I got out
04:28
I take flying lessons everybody has a
04:31
fear frontier
04:32
maybe it's failure we all have a place
04:34
where we come to where we've got a
04:36
moment of fear how we deal with that
04:38
determines our future in our success and
04:41
what Patrick brought is so many of us
04:43
talking about the fear frontier and so
04:45
many of us just stop before we ever get
04:47
there and you really talked about how do
04:49
you know you're stopping so you kind of
04:51
recognize those fear responses and then
04:54
how do you turn it into performance
04:55
break through that fear and use it as a
04:57
source of energy for being successful
04:59
and that's what we're going to talk
05:01
about today I'm gonna help you find more
05:03
fear in your life because fear is the
05:06
fuel courage is the sparkplug but fear
05:08
is the fuel that changes everything in
05:10
your life every relationship and it's
05:13
even the fuel for love and we'll talk
05:15
about that and it's unusual to think
05:16
about it it took me 30 years to discover
05:20
this
05:20
three years to figure out the science
05:23
working with the best PhDs
05:25
neuroscientists psychologists from
05:27
Harvard MIT you name it and I realized
05:29
fear is a fraud it's just a movie we
05:34
play in our mind most of the time we
05:37
play a horror movie we sell them play a
05:41
movie in our mind that's a comedy that's
05:45
a love story that's an adventure when
05:49
something strange happens we immediately
05:51
flip and start playing that horror movie
05:53
and now I'm gonna try and distill it
05:55
down into 45 minutes to help you guys
05:57
figure out where in your life you're
06:01
avoiding fear and then where you can use
06:03
fear to find more strength and
06:06
everybody's heard about this 120 pound
06:08
woman who could pick up a car to save
06:11
her son who's trapped under it right
06:12
you've heard those stories how is that
06:14
possible that's possible because your
06:17
body your brain the amygdala creates a
06:21
fear cocktail you get DHEA you get
06:24
cortisol you get adrenalin you have all
06:26
these these enzymes coursing through
06:29
your body and it gives you superhuman
06:32
strength and it gives you superhuman
06:34
acuity and mental powers all of a sudden
06:39
you've moved to anguish and panic and
06:41
you're migdal is gonna make the
06:43
decisions for you what you just
06:44
witnessed was a fear tell every time
06:48
your amygdala turns on and activates you
06:50
get the same reaction in your body when
06:52
we work with companies what we try and
06:54
do is get them out and actually do
06:55
something to create those changes in
06:57
their bodies so they start to recognize
06:58
it so then when you get an email from
07:00
your boss or client or something like
07:03
that and you feel those changes in your
07:05
body you recognize that the amygdala has
07:07
been activated the fear tells are what
07:11
gives that away that's why it's
07:12
important you start to understand those
07:14
because we're going to use those fear
07:16
tells to make radically better decisions
07:18
so when the amygdala kicks in and you
07:21
get one of those responses you have two
07:23
choices
07:24
you can either let it go to waste or you
07:26
can use it for something good you guys
07:29
understanding ear tells is going to
07:31
release a whole new life for you I
07:33
guarantee you what we're gonna talk
07:36
about today is how finding more fear can
07:40
make your life better that's the whole
07:43
secret we spend so much time trying to
07:46
avoid fear and that's just the opposite
07:48
of what we want to do you can either
07:50
tame fear or fear continue because there
07:54
are only two ways in life to make
07:56
decisions either out of fear well we
07:59
might get fired and I might not get this
08:01
promotion those are all fear-based
08:03
decisions or out of opportunity
08:08
you're the author of your life and that
08:11
means every decision you're making is
08:12
based on an opportunity so what we're
08:15
gonna do today
08:17
push that fear frontier out we're gonna
08:20
move it over so that you can stay in
08:22
control of making decision in a
08:24
high-stress environment in a fearful
08:26
environment and even better than that
08:28
you can use that fear for superhuman
08:32
powers
